Summary
NoS Summary - a nurse in a creche where the children have tuberculosis.
British Pathe synopsis: Subtitled: "Just a few of the things a Nurse writes home about." Interior of what is probably a nurses home. Four nurses sit in a room with several beds and dressing tables. The nurse nearest the camera is writing a letter, one reads a book and another does some sewing. C/U of piece of writing paper with the words: "Dearest Mother, Glad to say I am now nicely settled in my work - " followed by a C/U of the nurse who is writing the letter. "Every morning Mothers from far and near bring their tiny mites to us - " Exterior shot - women carry babies down a narrow terraced street and into a doorway close to the camera. It looks to be a poor area. C/U of a young boy (4 or 5) leading a younger baby along. He is followed by other mothers and a father carrying their children into the hospital. M/S of a nurse in uniform grasping a little girl by the hand and guiding her inside. Interior - nurse sits with mother and baby, she looks at the child then writes out a prescription. "Exams, too, to make sure the little ones are well - " the nurse writes in her letter. C/U of a nurse (dressed in black) holding a stethoscope to a babies’ chest. The nurse who holds the baby has a pair of large dark glasses perched on top of her head so this is probably a tuberculosis ward. The baby has its throat looked at - the doctor holds its tongue down and looks into its mouth with a light. The nurse comforts the baby. M/S of four children sitting at a table having something to eat "And not a moment too soon, bless them" reads the nurse’s letter. C/U of a table of babies with plates in front of them. The nurses spoon feed the babies. "They’re taught to tidy up, too - " M/S of the children getting up from the tables and moving their chairs to the side of the room. C/U of a child moving a table. "Then simple little play lessons - " Out in the open air with the children all wearing hats to protect them from the sun, the children play with building bricks and other basic toys. "Sunshine is sometimes scarce in Hoxton, so we give them sun-ray - " C/U of special dark glasses being put over a child’s eyes. M/S of nurses and children wearing the dark glasses playing in the ward. C/U of the children in their glasses. "And when it’s bright outside, dear, we all grow young again - " A group of children hold hands and walk in a large circle in the yard - perhaps playing ring-a-ring-a-roses. C/Us of the children playing in the sand pit outside. "So the day goes on, until the Mothers call for their loved ones." High angle shot of all the children in their own clothes waiting for their parents. M/S of the mothers collecting their children from the nurses and of children running into the arms of their mothers. "And now, dear, I’ll end this note of my day. Yours lovingly, Mary." C/U of the nurse finishing her letter.
