Summary
COI synopsis: Maggie Palmer investigates the faces behind the flame. She discovered in one London factory alone the whole history of candle making from the beginning: perfect candles hand made by a process which has not changed since the Middle Ages through to the most sophisticated machinery providing literally millions of candles for world-wide distribution. She also found that in its modern form this old-established industry has discovered by-products and spin-offs which have given essential help to many other apparently unconnected activities - from the motor industry to survival kits for mountaineers. So the candle still burns, its light as beautiful as ever and in an emergency still as vital.
