Summary
COI synopsis: Every schoolboy realises that air is essential for us to live. This programme explores less well known, but equally important uses of air in our constant battle for survival. An anaesthetic is air - of a sort: a carefully controlled mixture of oxygen and drugs that sends patients off to the painless unknown. Unfortunately, for young patients, the fear of the unknown causes problems. A London anaesthetist has now made a child’s anaesthetic more of an adventure than a trauma. No more ominous masks and unpleasant smells: just a toy telephone, a fairy story and a slow easy drift into sleep.
