Summary
COI synopsis: Imagine a three dimensional picture emerging from a two dimensional glass plate. An optical illusion, yet utterly real - a hologram. This beautiful new type of imagery is a form of photography which makes use of the very special nature of laser light. But holograms are much more than photographs with an extra dimension: their extraordinary properties will make them the basis of a completely new art form, and lead to a series of powerful new industrial techniques. The future scope is vast, with applications ranging from advertising to monitoring the condition of fuel elements in a nuclear reactor. The latest advance suggests that soon we could all have holograms hanging on our walls. The age of holograms is upon us.
