Summary
COI synopsis: Prevention is better than cure... a simple early warning system can mean that trouble - or even disaster - can be averted. The sea has a remarkable capacity to absorb quite safely our industrial wastes. But we can overdo it - and damage the complex chain of life for which the sea is home. Now, like the miner’s canary of old, a simple animal can warn us of the dangers. A primitive creature - a hydroid - is proving to be a sensitive, cheap, yet accurate gauge of the levels of pollution.
