Summary

COI synopsis: The car, has become an essential component of the Twentieth Century way of life, but it’s also an avid consumer of the Earth’s resources. The world’s supply of oil already running low; both the car and road transport generally may have to change quite radically to survive. Living Tomorrow looks at some of the possibilities for the future: ‘The Gas Turbine Vehicle’ has proved that an engine designed for aircraft can be scaled down and remain efficient; ‘The Electric Car’ is hot favourite for the future, and is likely to be powered by a sodium sulphur cell being developed by British Rail; ‘Engine Modifications’ to cut pollution and petrol consumption are already developed, and will become more extensively used; ‘Improved Public Transport’ as an alternative to private cars is part of other experiments taking place in Britain, but every development still depends on some economical use of our resources if the car is to survive.
