MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Sporting Highlights 1978. DESCRIPTION: Highlights from some of the Sporting Events which Movietone has covered during 1978. It was a very wet University Boat Race for the Cambridge crew who sank a mile from the Finishing Line. The competitors in the Motor Cycle and Go-Kart Grand Prixs, both held at Silverstone, also got wet, this time in the heavy rain that troubled both events. The World Speedway Championships were held at Wembley Stadium and it was Ole Olsen of Denmark who gained the Championship. Carlos Reutemann drove a Ferrari to victory in the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. On the green turf of Wembley Ipswich Town won the FA Cup and Leeds the Rugby League Challenge Cup. In the finals of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, Martina Navratilova defeated Chris Evert for the Ladies Title and for the third successive year Bjorn Borg became Mens’ Champion when he beat Jimmy Connors. Both the Grand National and the Derby provided exciting finishes, in the Grand National ‘Lucuis’ ridden by Bob Davies, won by half a length and a neck from ‘Sebastian V’. In the Derby with ‘Hawaiian Sound’ looking certain to win ‘Shirley Heights’ moved up from fourth place to pass the post first. It was a magnificent win for Greville Starkey and ‘Shirley Heights’. Rugby League Cup Final, St. Helens v Leeds (GR 2555). Wimbledon Men’s & Womens Singles Finals (GR 2563), showing Martina Navratilova, Duchess of Kent presenting cup. Bjorn Borg receives trophy from Duke & Duchess of Kent. The Grand National (GR 2549) with winner Bob Davies on Lucius. The Derby (GR 2558) with winner Greville Starkey on Shirley Heights.
