- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Wimbledon Centenary and Finals. DESCRIPTION: For a hundred years tennis players have been battling on the lawns of Wimbledon, for the honour of being Champion. On the opening day of this year’s Tournament, TRH the Duke and Duchess of Kent presented former Singles Champions with Commemorative Centenary Salvers. In this Anniversary year, a Museum has been opened, next to the famous Centre Court, which traces the history of Lawn Tennis and its Championships. The Men’s Singles Final was a hard-fought battle between reigning Champion Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors. Borg eventually emerged the winner, thus receiving the Trophy for a second year from the Duke of Kent. In the Ladies’ Final, the hopes of Britain were on Virginia Wade, her opponent was Betty Stove of the Netherlands. The first set went to Miss Stove but the next two were Virginia’s and after years of trying the Wimbledon Trophy was hers. Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, came onto the Centre Court to make the presentation. SHOTLIST: Track back 1877-1977 to crowds at Wimbledon. GV crowds. CU programme.
