MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Grand National Colour. DESCRIPTION: The 1974 Grand National - the greatest steeplechase of the year. 42 runners take part in this hard race. First: last year’s winner ‘Red Rum’. Second: L’Escargot (who came 3rd last year). Third: Outsider ‘Charles Dickens’. SHOTLIST: Part 1 GV mass crowds & course. LV mass crowd. SV 2 women looking at list of runners on newspaper. SV interior showing Trophy Board. CU 1973 marks the end of Era. SV pan Mrs Topham leaving building with her sister’s children. SV Grand National Trophies. GV horses parading round paddock. SV Brian Fletcher up on Red Rum No 1. SV Thorner on No 27 Quintus, zoom back to GV jockeys and horses leaving paddock. SV Nos 20 and 24. SV horses on way to course. SV No 22 Francophile at 119’ he rears slightly. SV pan No 1 Red Rum going up course. SV pan No 2 L’Escargot. GV horses parading up course. SV No 4 followed by No 5. SV crowd. SV No 6 Princess Camilla rearing up. 7 shots of bookies & punters. GV horses milling around at start. GV start of Grand National pan to BV. GV as they race towards first fence, tracking shot as they race towards & jump first fence, No 14 in lead followed by 13, 12 and 28 and others. CU jockey Guest No 14 Bahia Dorada. GTS as horses jump No 2. CU as they jump No 3 with Rough Silk making the running with No 30 Charles Dickens. GV as they approach and jump No 4, No 6 falls at this jump but cannot be seen. CU No 37 and 23 pan to horse’s head pan to No 30 jumping 5th fence. LV tracking shot horses approaching Becher’s Brook. GV horses over Becher’s Brook with Nos 30, 37 and 23 with others (no fallers). SV pan 2 loose horses. GV horses jumping No 7. CU jockeys Nos 13 and 30 in lead. GV as they jump Canal Turn Nos 13, 30 and 37 in lead at 307’ No 40 falls with others, zoom in to four jockeys. GV crowd. GV as they approach Valentine’s Brook with No 13 Sunny Lad in lead. Remote control shot as they jump the brook. GV Nos 13 and 30 in lead. LV as the horses approach and jump fence No 10. CU jockey No 30. SV Nos 30 in lead followed by 13 & others, they jump fence No 11, No 21 Cloudsmere falls. CU jockeys in the lead Nos 30 and 13. GV as they jump fence No 14, at this stage Red Rum is about 6 lengths behind the leaders. CU woman looking through glasses. GV as they approach and jump water jump No 16 in following order, 23, 30, 2, 13, 9, 4 and 37. END OF PART 1. Part 2 SV horses race round bend for start of the 2nd lap. TS as they jump No 17 fence with 9, 13, 30 all bunched together, No 9 Vulgan Town goes into lead. CU jockey No 9. SV as they jump fence No 18 with 9 in lead followed by 30, 23 and others at this fence No 8 falls but cannot be seen. CU jockey No 30 they jump No 19 fence. TS Red Rum now taking the lead followed closely by 30 and 34 and 9, No 30 and No 1 racing neck and neck, they jump fence No 20 Red Rum now in lead. CU Fletcher on Red Rum. SV No 30 and No 1 jump fence No 1 Red Rum goes into lead, pan back to Nos 30, 34 and 2 nearest camera. GV as they approach & jump Becher’s Brook. GV crowd watching. GV as they jump Canal Turn with Red Rum in lead followed by Nos 30, 34, 2, 4 and 9 & others. TS Red Rum well in lead jumps Valentine’s Brook. TS with Red Rum in lead. CU jockey Carberry on L’Escargot following close behind Red Rum. SV TS Red Rum over jump 26, ditto stumbles slightly & recovers. CU Fletcher on Red Rum well in lead. GV as Red Rum comes into straight well in the lead. FV kids jumping about by winning post, horses approaching in b/g. SV Red Rum racing down straight Fletcher stands up on his stirrups and waves to the crowds pan with him as he passes the post to win. CU Fletcher & Red Rum being led in. LV ditto as he passes crowds. SV Fletcher walks away. SV Bill Davies’ daughter putting sash over Red Rum’s head. SV owner Noel le Mare 86 year old alongside horse holding trophy. SV horse with owner, he is asked to hold cup aloft pan to Red Rum. END OF PART 2.
