Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Surf Carnival. DESCRIPTION: Further conflict over racial issues at the third surf lifesaving contest between Australia and South Africa at Sydney’s Coogee Beach. Police are called in to deal with the group of protestors who disrupt the Carnival. SHOTLIST: SV flag zoom out to show South African life guards marching along beach. SV pan anti apartheid demonstrators. CU demonstrator speaking into microphone zoom out to show mass of demonstrators behind him. LV lifeguards procession march towards camera. SV demonstrators behind wire fence. Police rush in to remove demonstrators who had thrown themselves in the path of South African life guards. SV pan police carrying demonstrator. SV & LV ditto (different woman). SV man on roof with sign Racists Go Home. LV police drag demonstrator up shops through crowd. LV lifeguard race begins as they run down beach. LV South African lifeguard runs and plunges into sea. zoom in to SV Australian lifeguard plunges in. SV South African feeding out safety wire from drum. SCU team mate passing wire over head. CU Australian passing wire over her head. SV pan South Africans carry victim up beach. SV Australians rolling in wire. SV Australians carrying their victims. GV demonstrators sitting quietly watching. LV lifeguard swims up to beach and then starts running towards camera.
