Summary

But the climate that inspires relaxation breeds riot and race hatred. 1955 - A state of emergency is declared. Sir John, now Lord Harding, is appointed Governor and Commander in Chief. 1958 - Mr Macmillan goes there, following visits to Greece and Turkey but his plan is rejected. 1959 - and at last, an agreement is signed providing for Cyprus to become a Republic in 1960. 1964 - And we’re back where we started.
