- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Pope John - a Tribute. DESCRIPTION: People all over the world - of every faith join in mourning the untimely death of Pope John. Born of a humble peasant family, he rose to become Patriarch of Venice as Cardinal Angelo Giuseppi Roncalli. At 76 years of age he was elected and crowned Pope in 1958. Pope John thought the Papal Encyclical Pacem in Terris - Peace on Earth - which he signed in April, the most significant achievement of his reign. Hopes of world peace are poorer for his passing.
