MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The Queen in New Zealand (In Colour). DESCRIPTION: Auckland’s annual regatta has been held for over a century, but the Queen’s visit to the Tamaki Yacht Club made this year’s event the first Royal Regatta ever held there. At Wellington, a stiff Nor’-Wester was gusting up to 50 miles an hour, so the Queen stepped ashore at a more sheltered quay, to begin her tour of New Zealand’s capital, a city built on hillsides. Over 10,000 youngsters were gathered in Athletic Park for a display which pointed the New Zealanders’ passion for sport. A sheep-shearing contest, followed by a wool fashion parade, was next on the Queen’s programme. But the focal point for the next Royal engagement was New Zealand’s Parliament Building. Here, Her Majesty opened a special session of Parliament. It was an impressive formal occasion in a tour which has been usually informal and memorable for its colour and variety.
