- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Royal Tour of Ghana. DESCRIPTION: This is a bird’s-eye-view of Ghana’s capital, Accra, a city of about 140,000 people. And the Ghana coastline, where about a mile from the city is Christiansborg Castle. Once a fortress, it is now the residence of the Queen during her visit. Accra itself is a city of crowds and markets, famous for the market mammies, a buxom, jovial lot!. The airport was crowded on the great day, and chiefs, with their retinues, had come from all over the country. Waiting to greet the Queen was President Nkrumah and his Egyptian born wife, and many of Ghana’s leading citizens were presented at the airport. The first highlight of the tour began at Black Star Square. With a fine cavalry escort, and cheered by thousands, Her Majesty arrived to witness the combined armed forces and police parade. Crowds again, to see the Queen arrive for another fascinating spectacle, the surf boat regatta. Then, Her Majesty was presented with a model of a Ghana surf boat.
