MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: South African Parliament Opens. DESCRIPTION: A new phase in the political life of South Africa began, when Parliament was opened at Capetown - without Jan Smuts. Dr Jansen, the Governor-General, read the speech from the throne in English and Africaans inaugurating the third session of the tenth Union Parliament. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. Elevated GV rooftops of Capetown. Ditto. Various shots of the Union Building grounds. CU statues - Paul Kruger; Cecil Rhodes; Louis Botha & James Hertzog. Interior - Johannes Strauss seated at desk, & CU of him. Dr Malan walks across grounds - into camera with wife. Elevated GV of mounted soldiers preceding carriage of Governor-General Dr Jansen & wife. Ditto standing outside Parliament Buildings. Elevated shot of them entering building.
