MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The Election - Labour Gains Bare Majority. DESCRIPTION: Polling was reported heavy in all areas, over 80% of the electorate voted. Large crowds collected in London to watch the results come through. After Labour’s win by a narrow majority Mr Attlee announced they would carry on. SHOTLIST: GV Houses of Parliament. People arriving at polling stations. Mr & Mrs Marshal with children into camera. Sedan chair brings voter in Guildford. Horse drawn coach with four people, post-horn sounded by huntsman. 100 year old person voting. CU vote being placed in box. ‘X’ marked on ballot paper. Churchill at polling station, enters car after voting. Lines of ballot boxes placed in position. Counters at tables. Boxes emptied onto tables - counting etc., Mr Morrison and Mr Gough watching - shaking hands - this at Lewisham Town Hall. Walthamstow - Mr Attlee hears the returning officer announce him as winner. Mr Attlee shakes hands and says a few words. Night - Piccadilly Circus with crowds watching results. Trafalgar Square with crowds watching screen. Churchill & Attlee flashes on screen etc. Following day - crowds on Underground station reading their papers - enter trains - interiors reading papers. News venders and newspaper vans. Interior with people listening to radios. Lord Woolton looking at teleprint machine. Two people bump into each other reading their papers. Various shots of headlines of newspapers. Woodford - Mr & Mrs Churchill out onto steps to hear Mr Churchill’s result - Churchill speaks. Crowds in Downing Street. Attlee walks out of No 10 and is asked about Cabinet Meeting - he replies "We are carrying on, and a statement will be issued later". Attlee into car and drives away. Reporters around Mr Morrison who also confirms Attlee’s statement.
