Summary
Square mesh track is used whenever a runway is needed by RAF. Flat ground can thus be converted into airfields in twenty-four hours. Lancaster bombers and gliders using mesh. Manufacture of the mesh in the factory - electrically welded and tested for strength. Manufacture of a lighter variety of mesh - process of weaving seen in slow motion. This is used mainly for temporary roads on beaches and other soft ground where landings may take place. Finished product loaded at docks for despatch to Italy etc.
