Summary
US National Archive entry: 9 min, si at sd speed, B&W, 35mm US troops are warmly greeted by French townfolk. Nazi collaborationists are abused as they are marched through the streets. Abandoned German clothing is salvaged by civilians. De Gaulle enters Chartres, and greets and then confers with Generals Eisenhower and Koening. German prisoners are unloaded from trucks. Naval guns pound shore installations and landing craft goes ashore. Prisoners are herded along the beach. British ships, including the Rodney, bombard a channel port; RAF pilots are pulled from the sea onto the Rodney; the Rodney and a German battleship exchange fire. Tanks advance across a field, enter a town, and demolish buildings. Collaborationists are led from their hiding places. German prisoners, one of whom is drunk, are questioned. Flamethrowing tanks advance; troops cross the Seine on a pontoon bridge; French civilians and allied troops remove obstructions from roads.
