Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Olympic Winners. DESCRIPTION: The athletics continued with the 50k Walk which was won by Ljunggren of Sweden. There was a photo finish in the 100 metres with American Dillard just beating his compatriot Ewell. In the 800 metres final before first placed Whitfield (USA) and second Wint of Jamaica broke the world record. Mrs Blankers-Koen of Holland won the ladies 100 metres. In the pool American Walter Ris set a new record for the men’s 100 metres free-style. In the women’s spring-board it was American first and second. SHOTLIST: KS elevated GV competition in progress, running, long jump etc. Several shots of competitors exercising their muscles for 50k road walk. Elevated start of road walk. Cut-ins crowds watching. MS walkers out of stadium. MS walkers into camera, stadium in background. MS javelin throwing, Miss Baume (Austria) throws. Pan of javelin & landing. Trucking shot of road walk Whitlock (No 388) & Martineau, during walk, Whitlock looks at his watch. Several shots of walkers having water thrown over them, others sponge themselves. Into camera - Steele (USA) jumping, crowds in background. GV crowds watching. Wembley Stadium Underground sign. Ljunggren (Sweden) nearing stadium. Trucking shots of him along road. Elevated enters stadium & winning. Godel (Swiss) (No 394) comes into stadium, waves his hat, elevated shot of him stopping thinking he has finished, told to carry on. Johnson (GB) finishing third. Start of 100 metres, competitors check the starting equipment. MS false start. Into camera race being run & finish, Dillard wins, Ewell thinks he has, starts to jump & dance about. Photo-finish of race shows Dillard clear winner. Indicator shows result of 100 metre, US flag above. Elevated GV Wembley Pool. Elevated start of men’s 100 metres free-style. Cut-ins Shah of Persia & Prince Bernhard watching. Underwater shots - men turning. Above water SV of race & finish. Walter Ris (USA) wins. Women’s spring board diving. Zoe Ann Olsen (USA) diving in slow motion. Cut-ins crowds watching. Slow motion - Miss Draves (USA) dives. Normal speed, competitor dives, cut to underwater shot of her entering water. Stadium - 800 metres final - pan of race with Whitfield (USA) taking lead, Wint (Jamaica) sprints & tries to catch him, but fails. Victory ceremony for 800m. MS pole vaulting. Smith (USA) over. Start of 100 metres women’s. Panning Fanny Blankers-Koen beating Dorothy Manley (GB). Victory ceremony of above. Crowds shelter in rain. Various types. 5,000 metre final, start of race, also being run in heavy rain. Panning - Shots of Emil Zatopek & Reiff (Belgium) overtaking one another. Cut-in judges in plastic macs. Crowds watching, getting very excited as Reiff takes lead & goes on to win. Zatopek sprints really fast hoping to overtake Reiff but fails.
