MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Princess Margaret’s First Public Engagement. DESCRIPTION: Princess Margaret accepts the Freedom of Glasgow on behalf of the Highland Light Infantry. SHOTLIST: NEWSREEL VERSION - KS MS procession across George Square. MS Princess Margaret, Lord Provost Hector McNeil and Major General Telfer-Smollett in procession. SCU & MS. SCU Princess and McNeil. GV Princess inspects Highland Light Infantry. GV crowds in square. Provost hands over casket to Princess, who is acting on behalf of the Regiment. Cut-in crowds. SCU & CU Princess Margaret making her first public engagement says It is always a great joy to me to come to Scotland. To you my Lord Provost and to all the citizens of this great city, I will say thank you from my heart. You have given your greatest honour to my regiment. We will see that it is in safe keeping. SPECIAL VERSION: KS GV George Square with troops paraded. Princess Margaret comes across square, inspects the Highland Light Infantry of which she is Colonel in Chief. Lord Provost presents casket to Princess on behalf of the regiment. Lord Provost says a few words of welcome. Princess stands and returns compliment saying My Lord Provost, on my first public engagement as Colonel-in-Chief of the Highland Light Infantry it falls to me to express to you and the city of Glasgow the thanks of the regiment of the great honour which you have bestowed upon us. I know that there is not a man serving in the regiment or amongst the ranks of our old comrades, who is feeling proud and faithful today [sic]. It is always a great joy to me to come to Scotland, the land of my birth. To you my Lord Provost and to all the citizens of this great city, I would say, thank you from my heart. You have given the greatest honour to my regiment, we will see that it is in safe keeping.
