Researcher Comments
Speech: Dalton said: I realise that the increased Tobacco Tax is a bit of a shock and I want you to be quite clear why it is necessary. We buy our tobacco overseas and pay for most of it with our all too precious dollars we earn from the United States for our fine quality manufactured goods. We need these dollars much more to buy food and machinery for our industries. It is clear that our national duty is to smoke less; we can save 30 million dollars if every smoker has three cigarettes or three pipe this year for every four he or she smoked last year. If so, we shall still be smoking as much as we did pre-war. Believe me, it is not your extra ‘bob’ I want the dollars; the choice is simply food - or fags.
