- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Nuremberg Trials. DESCRIPTION: The trial begins of twenty top Nazis charged with many crimes, not least of which is the breaking of 26 treaties, agreements and assurances. Lord Justice Lawrence was presiding and it took all day to read the indictments. Among those in the dock were Goering, Hess, Keitel, von Ribbentrop, von Papen and Donitz. When called all pleaded ‘not guilty’. SHOTLIST: KS Exterior of Palace de Justice, American guards outside, people arrive. Interior - GV of court, everybody stands as tribunal enters, into camera, four judges taking seats. MS Lord Justice Lawrence and Sir Norman Birkett on his right. Lawrence addresses court, various shots of dock, etc. Judge Jackson reads part of indictment, back view of him as he reads same. Various shots of the docks, in which Goering is writing, Hess looking about court, appears to be in a daze. Ribbentrop talks to his counsel. Keitel and Rosenberg talk together. This went on during an adjournment. Elevated shot of prisoners in dock. Lawrence addresses prisoners "you must plead guilty or not guilty". Calls upon Goering. Goering into mike, starts to make a speech, interrupted by Lawrence, "you are not allowed to address the tribunal direct, except through your counsel". Goering pleads "not guilty". Hess next says "nein". Lawrence says "that will be entered as a plea of not guilty". Ribbentrop, Keitel, Rosenberg, Julius Streicher, Schacht, von Papen, Arthur Seyss-Inquart plead "not guilty". Goering stands up and tries to make another speech, but is told to sit down. Various shots of Judge Jackson, the US prosecutor addressing court. LIBRARY: Hitler and his generals look over map. Germans charge forward in streets. Germans run through burning streets. Ship sinking, bows sticking out of water. GV concentration camp and internees. Elevated night shot of London during height of blitz, fires everywhere. German soldiers goose-step, cut-in Hitler watching parade. CU feet goose-stepping. SV Goering, Himmler and Goebbels watching parade. Cut back to Jackson still addressing court. GV of court, also tree (chart) of Nazi organisation on wall, Hitler’s name at top. In dock while Jackson reads, Donitz, half asleep, next to Raeder. MS Streicher looking "daggers" Major Coogan (USA) addresses court, Goering seated in dock, even when his name is mentioned, doesn’t seem to take a bit of interest. Rest his chin in his hands. Goering confers with his counsel, during adjournment, various shots. GV of court to finish.
