Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Berlin Today. DESCRIPTION: The devastating effect of the Allied bombing can be seen in the ruins of Berlin. Life in the city carries on and Berliners have tried to bring back some of the pre-war gaiety. British and American troops mingle with the locals at such locations as Wannsee Lake and the Olympic swimming pool. Outside the Reichstag a market grew up where good were bartered or exchanged, but the inter-allied provosts ordered the German police to put a stop to it. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. GV ruins. Various shots of ruins, also Kaiser Wilhelm Church, artist outside painting. Two German women walk along street, ruins background. Various shots of German girls dancing in side walk cafes. Shots of people seated at cafe tables drinking, waiter serves them with beer (lager). Shots of Wannsee, yachting on same, also bathing. At the Olympic Stadium Swimming Pool, "Desert Rats" swimming, about 100 all dive in at once, on the beaches at Wannsee, Allied troops fraternise with German girls, basking in the sun, bathing, etc. At the "Femina" night club (CU sign) artists acting, girl dances. Various shots of ballroom dancing, majority of them being girls, very few soldiers dancing. Various shots of dancing. Outside the Reichstag, crowd flock to deal in black market, selling cameras, field-glasses, etc for Allied cash, or by barter. German police raid "market" taking all the black marketeers away, letting the soldiers go free. Shots of marketeers being carried away in lorries.
