Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Death of Berlin. DESCRIPTION: Russian newsreel pictures show the actual taking of Berlin by the Red Army. By the 13th April all the main districts of Berlin had been over run and then they broke through to the Reichstag. Victory signs were erected by the Russians on the Unter den Linden and a Russian girl took over the directing of the traffic. In an official ceremony the Americans took over the Adolf Hitler barracks from the Russians. British troops also arrived in the city and marched past their Commanding Officer Major-General Lyne. The damage inflicted by Allied bombing raids can be plainly seen, as can the remains of Hitler’s Chancellory. Outside Hitler’s bunker is the spot where his body and that of Eva Braun are supposed to have been burnt. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. Street fighting, tanks (Russian) advancing. Various shots of street fighting, artillery firing, tanks advance artillery with caterpillar wheels. Russian soldiers run all directions. Russian troops break into the Reichstag, interior shots soldiers running. German prisoners begin to trickle in; lines of prisoners, pan up prisoners to writing on walls. Pictures of Roosevelt. Churchill & Stalin, also Truman. Churchill & Stalin in the Unter den Linden. Red Army girls control traffic at Bradenburger Tor. Russians hand over Adolf Hitler barracks to Americans. Cut-in of Red Flag flying alone, Russian troops march off, Red Flag & American flags fly over barracks. (CU Union Jack). "Desert Rats" enter Berlin armoured cars enter, Major General Lyne takes salute. Canadian units, also Guard marching past the Franco/Prussian Victory Column where the official handing-over to British took place, again salutes (taken by Lyne - AFU). General views, ruins of Berlin, civilians walk through streets. Civilians clear up debris, etc. Germans queue for transport. Cut-ins of German men, women & children watching entry in Berlin. Various shots remains of the Reichstag. CU ... the entrance. Reich Chancellory, British & Russian Service officers enter same, inspecting, look at Hitler’s desk, also his chair. Room badly damaged. Interior shots of banqueting room, chandeliers hanging just off floor. Outside shots of Hitler air raid shelter. SCU of petrol tanks, clothes which were supposed to be Hitler’s, shirt, jacket, etc. On balcony where Hitler used to give speeches, American soldier impersonates Hitler, finishing on CU of him.
