Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Over the Rhine. DESCRIPTION: In build up for the crossing of the Rhine, the Navy took a large number of landing craft and ferries to the scene. On the Army front a stream of tanks and vehicles of every kind had been pouring towards the river. Airborne forces using gliders were the first to cross. There were many crashes and accidents to the gliders but the paratroops managed to link up with the ground forces exactly as planned. Winston Churchill watched the operation with Field Marshals Montgomery and Alan Brooke, and then he crossed the Rhine himself. SHOTLIST: Cut story - Naval LCIs & LSDs en route Antwerp, various small craft at sea. LCIs, LCTs unloaded from LSDs at dock. Some of the craft makes it’s way along coast, others are taken over land. Smoke screen being laid, Monty’s usual barrage, 5.5’s firing, also at night. Prisoners brought off (at dawn) landing craft. Shots on aerodromes of lines of gliders, towing planes Halifaxes & Stirling. Several take-offs. C47 & C47’s take-off. Various shots of British & US glider-troops, also paratroops embarking. CU few types. Open-air briefing. Few cartoons chalked on fuselages on planes & gliders. Preceding the prisoners is a night shot of the crossing. Interior shot of cockpit of glider. Aerial shot over the Rhine, near Wesel, few fires burning below. German prisoners watch aircraft, gliders, etc., pass over. Aerial shots of paratroopers dropping to earth, several hundred. Gliders cast-off from towing planes. Glider lands, crashes into another plane, several crashes including Dakota which catches fire and explodes. Various shots on ground of glider troops crawling along, link-up with ground troops. Bank of the Rhine, Buffaloes and rafts carrying guns, etc. cross over. Churchill in Army uniform, scrambles over rubble. CU Churchill & Monty. MS Monty. Churchill & Brooke. GV of Churchill seated on a balcony watching battle. Groups of Churchill, Monty, Eisenhower, Sir Alan Brooke, Simpson (General US Army). Trail of rocket V2 en route for England, watched by Churchill. Churchill in amphibious craft crosses the Rhine to ..., alights other side ... with Churchill... ‘Tommies’.
