Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Cologne Captured. DESCRIPTION: Winston Churchill has visited Germany where he took a look at the Siegfried Line. The Allies have already swept past this line of fortification. The Hohenzollern Bridge across the Rhine at Cologne is reported to have been destroyed. This bridge has been part of memorable events in the past, at the end of the last war the British Army of Occupation marched across it. In 1936 we saw pictures of German soldiers swaggering across when Hitler re-occupied the Rhineland. Prior to the American’s capture of Cologne the city was the target of the first 1,000 bomber raid. The American First Army began the assault on 6th March and fighting was sometimes house to house. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS Army transport passing through Siegfried Line. MS ‘The washing hanging on the Siegfried Line’ (one vest & long johns). MS Churchill with General Simpson, Field Marshal Montgomery, Field Marshal Brooke, General Ismay. Party walk through dragon teeth of Siegfried Line. AV Rhine & wrecked bridges across same, this is opposite Dusseldorf. Library material - 1918 British Cavalry & troops crossing the Hohenzollern Bridge. Pan on bank to bridge shows our machine guns. 1929 British troops leave Rhineland again. Officer takes salute as troops march past. 1936 German troops march through Cologne, across the Hohenzollern Bridge. Germans march out of camera. AV Rhine, Lancasters in flight, bombs fall, including 4,000lbs., on city of Cologne, explosions etc. Direct hit on Lancaster, screen filled with smoke. On the ground, US 1st Army Troops move along streets of City, Sherman tanks enter, various of street fighting, sniping, men rush for cover, tracers fired at moving objects, car drives through street, tracers fired at same. Americans break down doors, windows etc. Yanks tend woman who was in car which they fired at. LS fellow in mufti strolling across street, tracers fired, finishes up running. German Panther tank gets direct hit, crews either falling out or blown, various of tank burning, TS streets, buildings collapsing, etc. Pan up to Cologne Cathedral spires to GV Cathedral.
