Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Good News in the West. DESCRIPTION: Good news of the Allied advance through France is being received every day. Monty is seen in conference with Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh Mallory, Air Marshals Broadhurst and Coningham and General Crerar (commanding the Canadian forces). After the capture of Villers Bocage, the new flail tanks were busy clearing mines left behind by the Hun. As the Americans swept on to St Malo, Brest, Lorient and St Nazaire, Brittany became a camp of German prisoners. When the city of Rennes was liberated there were scenes of great rejoicing and they quickly began rounding up men and women who had collaborated with the Germans. SHOTLIST: Cut story - AFU - KS. Shermans on move. Various shots of Shermans through streets over fields, country roads etc. Russian officers visit Normandy, group walk across airstrip, shows several wrecked glider on same. Several shots of Dempsey with Russian officers. Montgomery with General Crerar & Air Vice Marshal Leigh-Mallory. Group inspect map outside Crerar’s caravan. AFU - Elevated shots of Shermans across country in line. Infantry take cover behind hedges, crawl along road, run along road to miss enemy fire. Infantry & tanks enter town. French girl gives Sherman crew drink. British soldier tries on POW coat. Infantry & tanks along road. British soldiers in woods fire Bren guns. Aerial shots of our tanks on roads, also closely packed vehicles. Villiers Bocage sign, with background ruins of town, various shots of ruins. Engineers clear mines, also Scorpions clear mines, several mines explode. Pan of wrecked German equipment tanks, guns, armoured cars, also stacks of shells etc. Wreckage along sides of roads. Elevated shot lorry-loads of POWs through streets of Granville. POW march in endless streams along country roads escorted & unescorted. Yank infantry through town, French cheer etc. Big gun. CU muzzle "Berlin Buster". GV of same being transported along road. French cheer, wave etc.. CU French woman, also of flags on her dress. Signpost - Angers/Rennes. Elevated shot of square in Rennes, crowds cheer, wave etc. Shots of collaborationists brought from building last one manhandled by French. Various shots of French parade through streets of Rennes. French dance with American soldiers.
