- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Spirit of France. DESCRIPTION: Pictures smuggled out of occupied France show that thousands of Frenchmen are refusing to accept defeat. Underground newspapers are produced and well circulated. The "Men of the Maquis", guerrilla fighters, have their camps in certain inaccessible and mountainous districts. From there they strike blows at the enemy. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. Standard of Lorraine hoisted, small group of Frenchmen around same. (Colonial FU - German troops marching past Arc de Triomphe into camera, & pass camera, German tanks out of camera towards Arc de Triomphe). (Library - Elevated shot of Compiegne, shows troops marching past carriage (railway) in which was signed the 1918 Armistice. GV shot from outside shows interior of carriage, with Goering & Hitler seated. 68ft). Shot of de Gaulle inspecting Free French. French troops march through (Tunis Victory Parade) also motorised units. (CFU - In France, worker sets up type for paper). Various shots of papers, leaflets, etc., also poster, part of which is painted out. 16mm blown-up material - elevated shots of Grenoble, shows results of sabotage, (explosions), ruins of house & German HQ etc. Map of France. Men of the Maquis stand in group while standard of Lorraine is hoisted. Various shots of men making their way through woods. Various shots of camp in woods, one with tray of food in hand, another watches a dixey. Another sharpening a knife, while one milks a goat. Shot of Frenchman having his hair cut. Men of Maquis building huts. Men paraded pan of same. GV of motorised unit paraded. Training (various) with machine guns etc. Elevated shot of mountainous countryside covered in snow, men walk out of camera. Run across snow, also crawl. Men paraded GV of standard.
