Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Battle for Naples. DESCRIPTION: The British Forces liberated a large concentration camp at Cosenza. The inhabitants, Czechs, Poles, Yugoslavs and more, were very hungry when the British troops arrived. The push up through Italy continues and troops had soon reached Pompeii. The Royal Engineers worked diligently to undo the demolition of bridges etc. carried out by the retreating Germans. The British and American Air Forces continue hitting hard and often at mainland targets. General Clark and the Fifth Army arrived in Naples ahead of schedule. SHOTLIST: Cut Story - LS Mount Vesuvius. GS Badoglio & General Mason-McFarlane walk done steps into camera. MS Entrance of Cosenza concentration camp, various shots of internees. Czechs, Yugoslavs, etc. British troops hand then canned food, help them load luggage onto vans. MS General Clark & General Montgomery, walk past camera. GS of them with group of Yankee troops. Eighth transport on roads, through unnamed towns, troops fire mortars, snipe in deserted streets, as they advance. Fire Bren-guns, crawl through wire netting. Italian runs across road into camera. Sign of Pompeii and armoured transport enter. Sherman tanks enter, pan of modern ruins, also ancient ruins, GS theatre, with bomb crater, Yankees look round same. Various shots of bridges blown up by Germans before evacuating. Bulldozer at work, clearing debris. Camera drives between cheering crowds in Toree & D’Annunziata. British troops on march, Vesuvius in the background and GS Vesuvius still active. Various shots of formations and single Mitchells & Baltimores in flight, bombs fall and hit targets. Fires start. Pass over LCI on way to Salerno, pass over shipping in Salerno Bay. VG shots of Mitchells in flight - please note. Fade to Sherman tanks enter Naples. GS island of Stromboli and Lipari. GS of Bren-Carriers enter Naples. Crowds cheer. GS of General Clark arrives & CU. Civilians kiss our troops on entry.
