Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: U-Boat Peril. DESCRIPTION: Lord Winston speaks on the grave menace of the U-Boat. Our shipyards continue their increased output and women are amongst the work force. Captured German film shows the activity onboard a U-boat that is out on patrol. SHOTLIST: Cut story - Reflection of ship at quay of dock. Lord Winston seated at the table (interior shot) speaking about losses of ships. MS & CU of same. Elevated pan of dockyard shows partly constructed ships. LS of keel. LS & MS of floors of ship. CU Keel passing camera. CU pair of feet blowing bellows. Rivets being knocked in place. CU hammer striking rivet. Workers arrive. Mass keels (shot of). Ribs of ship being lowered into position. GS bows of ship in scaffolding. GS George Peke (aged 16) rivet heater, Georgina Heywood (aged 17) picks rivet up from deck, runs over with same to three men (holder & two skilled riveters) John Willis, George Askew & George Gillespie. CU Electric hammer striking rivet. GS of ship. Girl welding, lifts shield GS of crankshaft slowly turning, nearby is W Averre (Shop foreman). CU & angle shots of same. GV of Diesel engine working, with Jack Adey at gauges. Jack Robinson & Morris Long trimming crankshaft. GS of propeller being lifted by crane. Ships (five) down runway (straight launchings). CU side of ship past camera. U-Boat bows breaking surface. Interior shot of crew at posts, crash dives, commander down conning tower. Water bubbles rising to surface VG. Crew wait while depth charges explode, lights go out, replaced. Commander through periscope, sub. surfaces (breaking surface) path of torpedo, strikes merchant ship, & explodes, several shots of sinking. Survivors in boat, survivors in public house tells of experiences; finishes with ship in convoy passing camera.
