Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Lord Gort Takes Over Malta Governorship. DESCRIPTION: Lord Gort arrives in Malta to take over as Governor of the strategically placed island. Malta continues to come under attack from German aircraft. SHOTLIST: Lord Gort is seen arriving during an Air Raid after a sailor hoists the red flag on the Palace roof and the siren is seen being sounded by a soldier. There are general shots of enemy aircraft. Bombers dive bombing and passing through AA fire and of bombs bursting and also dropping from plane. Many men examine debris in streets. Scenes of damaged houses with a woman hanging out her washing on a balcony. Homeless family cooking in street. Shots of people running to shelter. Interior shots of shelter, showing Maltese praying for Victory. They leave as ‘Raider Passed’ sounds. Interiors of St Augustine’s Church. Shots at Halfar Aerodrome showing ground crews running to aircraft. Pilot climbing in the cock-pit of ‘Hurricane’ and going into action. Aerial combat. General scenes of bombs dropping on Harbour. Close-up of crashed German plane being examined by RAF. Long shot of countryside outside Valletta. Bombs bursting in distance. News. Boys rushing into streets. Shots of printing machine running off copies of the ‘Times Malta’, announcing that it has been awarded the George Cross. Albacore Sequence. Business as usual in the Torpedo Store. Torpedoes being taken out to aircraft. Albacores being got ready for action. Taking off. Interior of Governor’s Palace General Dobbie and various officers arrive for conference. These include Sir Walter Monckton and Vice Admiral Leatham. C-in-C Malta. There is an inspection of Service men and Civilians. Air Officer. C-in-C inspects fighter pilots and ground crews, whom he addresses. He also inspects Air/Sea Rescue Service. Party embarks in a Sunderland for return journey. Inspection of wrecked aerodrome buildings. Alarm sounds again as they move into mess. Later they carry on with inspection. There are views of the damage done from steps of the Governor’s Palace, followed by a shot of Lord Gort, the new Governor driving off. AA gun in action during alert.
