Summary
Pathe synopsis: New buildings mean new problems. Hemel Hempstead in Herts. has a new town, built to serve a fast expanding population. But the old High Street, once the commercial centre of the town, suffered a severe set-back when the bustling new shopping centre was built. But now the street is being re-vitalised, with the help of the Civic Trust, as a conservation area. It’s a scheme that’s never before been attempted in a new town but here, restoring to Regency splendour means more than just a dab of paint. It’s a face lift that proves that with a little ingenuity - like changing car parking, street lighting and landscaping - urban preservation has a place in the space age.
