Summary
Pathe synopsis: Come and see one of the seven wonders of the world - Niagara Falls - a sight you can see from a hotel bedroom. America is full of such surprises - Kennedy Airport, air-conditioned, civilised, refined, is also the gateway to the great untamed wild parts of America that more and more people are discovering. Glacier National Park, in Montana, high up in the Rocky Mountains where the best way to sample the sublime scenery is by horseback. The best way to see Florida’s Everglades National Park is by airboat with the Rangers, skimming through the mangroves, swamps and sawgrass at forty miles an hour. Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho is a caravan camper’s paradise. It’s also the haunt of bears that never hesitate to come right up to the car and give the windscreen a bit of a lick. Old Faithful the famous geyser is one of Yellowstone’s (and America’s) most famous landmarks hurling a steamy plume of water a hundred and eight feet in the air every few minutes. And in Yellowstone there’s a waterfall twice as high as Niagara. America’s spectacle is no better represented than by the fantastic spread of the Grand Canyon where the Colorado River has gouged out a preposterous gorge a mile deep. Strange shapes, strange colours, strange rituals: the befeathered stomping of Hopi Indians in a nearby reservation preserves an America that’s also very much alive.
