- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Picking peas isn’t usually the sort of performance you associate with a gruelling 24-hours a day military-precision type operation. But when the peas are to be used for quick freezing the whole process becomes a race against time. The pea crop is ripe for the picking for only about seven weeks, so harvesting is a day-in night-out operation. Much of the crop is mechanically shelled in the field and the processing time-target is 90-minutes from field to packing. The twentieth century ice-age is booming and in a Grimsby frozen food factory the peas are first tested for tenderness on a Tenderometer before they’re given the go-ahead. Then a whole series of washing and checking processes are swiftly carried out before the peas are blast-frozen on a cushion of arctic air.
