- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: A race of dragons in Torbay - dragon class yachts in keen competition in what’s fast becoming Britain’s favourite sea-racing venue. Sunshine’s so predictable here they’re proud to measure it with a glass that burns a strip of paper as the sun moves across the sky. The harbour painters at Brixham don’t need measuring devices, nor do the fishermen who need plenty of time to mend their nets in the time-tried way. West country scenery - especially in and around Torbay - is a typical English idyll, but more surprising is the strange complex of shapes and colours under the ground at Kent’s Cavern - home of prehistoric mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and ancient man. The animals that prowl around Paignton Zoo are very much alive. Dartmouth is a gallery of maritime history - a picture postcard maker’s dream. The best way to see the famous Naval College is to take a two hour trip up the Dart River to Totnes, one of Britain’s prettiest towns. It’s also the starting point for the revived GWR Dart Vallery Railway which steam age enthusiasts have proudly renovated. The Dart Valley leads to Dartmoor - wild ponies roam free and so can you if you take a pony-trekking holiday which might take you to Widecombe in the Moor where on one day of the year you can join in all the rustic fun of the fair together with Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all the other thousands who flock to this gymkhana-cum-sideshow.
