- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: The Moslem faith is worldwide but come to Morocco’s own Mecca - the hillside village of Moulay Idriss, a living shrine to King Idriss the Elder, warrior defender of the Islamic faith. Here, pilgrims gather every year, and where the faithful meet so do the salesmen. The paving stones of the tiny village square are the counters of the bazaar - and what’s for sale can often be bizarre, for the junk of the technological age has found its way to the edge of civilisation. There are as many temples in Thailand as there are mosques in Morocco. Here the faith is Buddhism, and as with Islam, that is ceremony. See the exotic Nail Dance. Beautiful Thai women wear false fingernails six inches long and perform the strange but graceful opening gestures of the Khatin, an eastern version of a university rag where the students of Cheng Mai University collect money and give presents to the Buddhist monks in the nearby monastery. A fabulous spectacle based on a simple act of charity. Less decorous is the act of hope and charity sponsored by the Save the Children Fund in Lesotho, one-time British Protectorate of Basuotoland. Here the children learn in the open air, not only how to tell the time, but how to till the soil. They grow their own vegetables not for education’s sake, but to survive. And they enjoy the fruits of their labour from a tin can which in this African near-wilderness has become the symbol of faith, hope and charity.
