Summary
Pathe synopsis: Imagine a floating airfield of a hundred jet aircraft and four thousand men and you have some impression of the immensity of the American attack carrier "Saratoga". All the excitement and colour of science fiction seem to have been captured by cameraman Martin Rolfe aboard the 80,000 ton ship in the Mediterranean. Supersonic jets launching and landing at speeds of over a hundred miles an hour are only part of the story. While the Captain sits in the control tower during flying operations, activities to fill a whole catalogue are taking place on the decks below. There’s a laundry with a battery of machines for washing and ironing thousands of shirts a week; four dentists; three barbers’ shops; a bakery producing a daily ration of a thousand loaves; storage space for nearly three million pounds of food; quiet chapels and even a television station that takes us back to the flight-deck, to the camera that plots every aircraft approach and recovery. Here’s a one-reel episode of tension and drama that packs all the excitement of any feature film.
