- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Here, near Westport in Ireland, life centres round a statue of Saint Patrick at the foot of the mountain where that patron saint climbed a precipitous path to spend forty days in fasting and prayer. Now, once a year, thousands of pilgrims from all over Ireland and all over the world climb, stumble, crawl and try to clutch their way up the merciless mountain in the Saint’s footsteps. It is a chastening endurance test which defeats many. Some pilgrims, even old ones, manage it with the help of faith and fervour. Others even face the sharp rocks with bare feet and with their way through to say their Ave Marias on the misty summit after a climb that can last, on an empty stomach, from midnight to midday. The Pic sees them "kneel where Patrick knelt, pray where Patrick prayed."
