- Commentary: Just as keeping improves the lavender oil, so does maturing improve the wine of Portugal. To drink a glass of port is to drink adventure. When the wine is ready for shipping, it must be carried for three days down the Douro, one of the most turbulent rivers in Europe. Now, to complete our holiday at home, one of the port wine boats from the Douro river visits the Thames, with full sail, a hard-rowing crew, and Portuguese dancing girls in traditional dress.
