Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Peace in Syria. DESCRIPTION: One of the clauses in the convention that ended hostilities in Syria was that Vichy forces should retire to selected areas. The exchange of prisoners also formed part and mostly Australians were handed over. Australian Units were among the first to march into Beirut. SHOTLIST: After the Armistice is signed, Vichy forces retire, with their tanks, guns, armoured units etc., to specially selected areas. British and Australian prisoners of war are returned where they detrain at depots. Meanwhile a column moves North to Beirut, the cameraman going by air (various shots of Syria by air) and is accompanied by Hurricanes of the RAF. Australians were the first to enter Beirut, and the total population had turned out to welcome them as they marched through the city; Later General Wilson, and General Catroux arrive for a conference in the High Commissioners office.
