Commentary: How Time Flies! It seems but yesterday (or does it?) that you could witness scenes like these -- Henley-on-Thames, and its gay Regatta, peak of the Rowing Calendar. Today, in wartime, Henley is subdued but serene. [Swans] The swans are still there, and so is the picturesque High Street, with its ancient Inns ... and the famous five-arched bridge. [CU Spar] And some of the old ‘uns still tell the old old story! [Houses] The quaint houses link the fourteenth century with (as the gasmasks show) the young people of today. [Boat (River)] From the River you can get a good view of the Church of Saint Mary, with its embattled Tudor Tower. [_ bridge] On the far side of the bridge are the sleek meadows that fringe the Regatta course -- and the famous willows. [Temple] It was here that the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race started in 1829 -- when Cambridge wore pink instead of blue; but they were "off colour" all the same! The River here is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames, at the foot of the finely-wooded Chiltern Hills. [Weir] Hambledon Weir and Mill, another favourite landmark for oarsmen and boaters -- and for thousands more, a sunny memory. [Lock] Do you remember that wonderful day at Hambledon Lock? [After keeper] Yes -- Henley’s part of the river is a lovely, wooded playground; though thoughts of play are dispelled at the sight of the boat that takes passengers by day, and precautions by night. It’s the Home Guard patrol boat. [Next (River)] How Time Flies! May these times come back soon!
