Summary
While General de Gaulle relaxed far from political life in Ireland, the battle for the Presidency of France began it’s first round. Some 30 million voters went to the Polls - who did they want to lead their country? Former Premier Georges Pompidou was a clear favourite for the top job - he had a clear lead over his rival Alain Poher. Now the two men must battle it out again in a second ballot, but the result seems a foregone conclusion.
