- Drama on the high seas - disaster averted by men of the RAF who flew the Shackleton planes which swept thousands of square miles of the Atlantic and found one sailor, Joan De Kat. Similarly, an air-search saved the life of Edith Baummann, the only woman competitor in the Single Handed Atlantic Race, whose trimaran started to break up in heavy seas.
