- Summary
- May, 1968 - a nation paralysed by strikes and torn by violence. An appeal for order and calm by General de Gaulle failed. Throughout France, and in Paris in particular, angry demonstrators clashed with riot police in bloody battles. Workers downed tools; factories, airports, railway stations, ports - all ground to a halt as students and Trade Union members demanded quick social reforms. France was a nation in turmoil.
