Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Mediterranean Fleet Action. DESCRIPTION: With the war now centering on the Mediterranean, our fleet is the dominant factor. The Fleet Air Arm is keyed up by constant practice, ready for when it will meet the Italian fleet. SHOTLIST: Shots of the fleet which includes the aircraft-carrier "Ark Royal". (It is not certain that she is the Ark Royal but naval experts here are agreed that she more than probably is. Anyway she can only be "Illustrious" or "Ark Royal"). There is also another Aircraft Carrier of an older type but her name is unknown. 15 inch gun practice is carried out by battleships. Swordfish machines practise torpedo dropping. (One shots shows the wake of the torpedo and will probably come in very handy.) Planes appear and bombs drop near the ship while multiple machine-guns, pom-poms and AA guns open fire. Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham (C-in-C Mediterranean) and Rear-Admiral Willis (His Chief of Staff) watch from the bridge. Planes return to "Ark Royal". Smoke on the horizon marks the end of the Italian plane. The pilot parachutes, a whaler is lowered and he is rescued. Shots of the White ensign. Shots reflected in a searchlight. And a finishing shot which should be remembered showing a battleship silhouetted against the setting sun.
