- Summary
- Sub title: Pathe sent its team of investigators to Germany to reveal the food situation. Their probe was through, impartial and complete. This film lays bare the facts and helps you objectively to see the truth emerging from a welter of conflicting reports. Official statement by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Sholto Douglas, C-in-C British Zone of Germany. Typical of the remarks heard in Britain is the opening sequence representing housewives voicing their opinion on the food going to Germany. From this point we flash to Hamburg where Germans demonstrate against the rations they are getting. From then on this exposé alternates pictorially between the extreme of privation and illegal and secretive means of living through black market activities and hoarding. (377 feet) While the countrymen are able to hoard, the City dwellers subsist on meagre rations. The facets of this document include insights into the workings of the Control Commission in their war on black marketeering and machinery for fair distribution of food; an ersatz sausage factory (filling made with wood pulp); starvation cases and the law taking action against those who act subversively. With the body of the commentary made by Sir Sholto Douglas, this is the first film of its kind to lift the lid of the true state of the German food situation in the British Zone of Occupation (476 feet).
