- Aboard HMS Sussex, off the coast of Malaya, comes General Mansbergh, commanding the Fifth Division, the first of the British Generals to arrive to arrange the details of Japan’s capitulation. Rear Admiral Holland and General Christison’s arrival completed the trio. From Singapore came the Japanese representatives. Heading the delegation was Vice Admiral Fukutomi signs the documents handing Singapore back to British rule. With this signing the surrender of Singapore is signed and sealed, the final act of unconditional surrender to be carried out before Lord Louis Mountbatten. NOTE: OVER THE FOLLOWING PART OF THE STORY IS MOUNTBATTEN’S WORDS TO HIS MEN The landings at Singapore. Released British prisoners of war, waving and cheering and some being medically examined.
