- Summary
- General Eisenhower with Air Chief Marshal Tedder drives through the City of London in open landau to the Guildhall, to receive the Freedom of the City. In his speech at Guildhall he says the high sense of distinction he feels is mingled with feelings of profound sadness. His most cherished hope is that after the fall of Japan neither his country nor ours will have to again face the tragedies of battle. (Over this speech are pictures of the first D-Day Anniversary at Arromanche). Eisenhower arrives at the Mansion House and from the balcony makes speech to the huge crowd below. He tells the crowd that he is now a Londoner himself and has as much right to be down in the crowd with them, yelling, as they have. Thanks them for their hospitality to his soldiers and says anyone who took a soldier into his home will always have his unfailing gratitude. Says they have done something in cementing the bonds that must always remain between his country and ours ... Churchill is beside him on the balcony.
