- Summary
- British troops in action in the streets of Athens. Field Marshal Alexander arrives at a conference called in an endeavour to reach some agreement between the warring Greek political factions: ELAS the Greek left wing organisation, and a group of former army officers and cadets. General Scobie is seen on his way to HQ. Alexander and Eden in conversation at the conference and are later seen viewing the fighting from a roof-top. Then an armoured vehicle arrives and from it steps the Prime Minister. (Dressed in uniform of Commodore of the RAF). He gives V sign and has a cigar. In the early hours of the day following his arrival, three quarters of a ton of high explosive was found in the sewers beneath the Athens hotel which housed the Greek government. German markings are seen on the side of one of the boxes. Archbishop Damaskinos is the newly-appointed Regent of Greece, the one man who is acceptable to all parties and is above party strife. French, American and Russian representatives arrive at the conference. M Papendreou the Greek Prime Minister who was to resign with his cabinet a few days later, while a short distance away RAF aircraft dive on the rebels with rockets and machine guns. Paratroops set up near Acropolis whilst under constant fire from the snipers on Monument Hill. With the resignation of Papendreou, Damaskinos calls on his people to put an end to the Greek tragedy.
