Summary
Wrecked church marks the path of General Dempsey’s Second Army advancing on Geilenkirchen, ruined in bombardment. American sappers unearth German box mines which were laid to hamper our advance. The troops and tanks advance through Geilenkirchen, and GVs of the damaged town. US troops enter the damaged tram station in Eschweiler and buildings housing mines are blown up. An Allied Military Government notice stipulates that from now on the official language is English. The first British Military Governor General is Major Reitz of South Africa, nephew of the late SA High Commissioner in England. At the southern end of the allied push the French Army sweep on to take Belfort. The people of Southern Alsace witness another historic change in the broken history of Alsace-Lorraine.
